Accountability and Transparency - How to counter corruption in development cooperation?

In the past, corruption cases have weakened confidence in humanitarian and development NGOs. In Switzerland and abroad, NGOs find themselves increasingly exposed to severe public and political pressure in their administration of financial contributions and donations. In addition, humanitarian and development NGOs mainly work in countries that are considered as the most corrupt according to Transparency International rankings. However, many organisations are still not sufficiently equipped for taking and implementing anti-corruption programs in their daily activities “in the field”.

On the basis of their experience, Transparency International Switzerland (TI Switzerland) and Bread for All (BFA) were motivated to take action and develop guidelines for NGOs operating in the domain of development cooperation in high-risk countries. These guidelines were introduced at our Roundtable last year. Over the past months, the guidelines have been thoroughly revised and edited as well as complemented with case studies. Furthermore, a new checklist has been developed that will allow development NGOs to detect corruption risks and weaknesses in their management systems.
The focus of this year’s Roundtable will be on concrete measures that can be taken in order to prevent and combat corruption.

All presentations at the Roundtable will be in English, but participants are free to express themselves in German or French if needed.
